Job Title: Senior Project Architect (Hybrid / Flex)Position based in the Oakland area offering a Hybrid/Flex Schedule.This mission-driven architecture and development practice works at the intersection of the built environment, social justice, and community wellness—designing spaces that promote healing, equity, and alternatives to incarceration. The team partners with directly impacted communities to reimagine environments that foster care, dignity, and transformation.The Senior Project Architect will lead design and planning efforts, blending architectural services with meaningful community engagement, facilitation, and research. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful designer with a passion for social impact and experience across a broad range of project types throughout California and nationally.Responsibilities:
- Provide technical drawing and design support on a variety of project types: new construction, renovation, adaptive reuse, housing, commercial, mixed-use, education, and emerging typologies.
- Collaborate with the design team to develop conceptual designs and translate them into technical drawings and presentations.
- Implement sustainable, community-informed solutions that align with the organization’s design values.
- Partner with the community engagement team to create tools and materials that support community-based design processes.
- Analyze and translate community feedback into design concepts and visual communication.
- Clearly communicate design ideas through sketches, 3D models, physical models, and other visual media.
- Collaborate with clients to refine project scope, budgets, and schedules.
- Help select and coordinate consultants to ensure effective design integration.
- Work with contractors and cost estimators to evaluate pricing and feasibility.
- Interface with relevant public agencies and jurisdictions.
- Lead the preparation of project documentation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Contribute to workshops, share knowledge, and help develop processes within the organization.
- Attend meetings and site visits, collaborating with leadership, clients, contractors, and project partners.
- On select projects, take on both Project Manager and Project Architect roles:
- Collaborate with teams to define goals, deliverables, and timelines.
- Coordinate workflows across internal teams and external partners.
- Keep leadership updated on staffing needs and project progress.
- Conduct milestone reviews and participate in project debriefs.
- Research and address key factors impacting projects, including policy, code, and zoning.
- Work with local architects of record on regional or out-of-state projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor or Master of Architecture
- 10+ years of experience in architecture
- Licensed or actively pursuing licensure (multi-state licensure is a plus)
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, and Adobe Creative Suite
- Advanced experience in construction documentation and detailing
- Knowledge of IBC and local building codes
- Strong communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills
- Experience mentoring junior staff and fostering teamwork
- Cultural competency and an understanding of systemic inequities in design
- Passion for equity-focused design and community-centered approaches
- Comfortable representing the organization at conferences, presentations, and interviews
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary Range: $110,000 – $125,000 with flexibility for exceptional candidates
